Thunderbird and Comcast

So for the $60 plus I’m paying in monthly cable internet and basic cable TV, here is an example of the fantastic customer support from Comcast:

Thank you for contacting Comcast. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with your Mozilla/Thunderbird browser issues.

I have reviewed your e-mail and unfortunately you have requested assistance on something Comcast does not support.

Well, okie-dokie.

Here was the problem: I couldn’t use Thunderbird, a freaking GREAT e-mail client, away from the Comcast network to send e-mail. I could receive all day long, but couldn’t send to save my life. So I asked Comcast for the settings that I needed to change to allow me to fully use THEIR service on my machine. Silly me, it’s as if I was asking for them to wipe my ass, “Sorry sir, we don’t do THAT.”

After some trial and error, here’s the fix. Comcast mo-mo’s:

Configuring Thunderbird to send Comcast mail from a site other than your home network.

Select the Tools Menu

Select Account Settings

Select Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Find the account with the following address: smtp.comcast.net, then click Edit

Change the port to 465

Under Security and Authorization, select SSL as the method of secure connection.

That’s it. Easy Cheesey.

So if anyone is pounding their head into the wall for the very same reasons, help ‘em out.

KSH

  1. YOU SAVED MY SANITY!!!! I Can’t Thank you enough. I am behind a school firewall. :-D

  2. Not a problem Matt, glad I could help.

  3. I used Thunderbird for years with comcast, then it very suddenly stopped working! I am on version 2.0.0.19, if that means anything. I tried changing the port settings you recommended, but to no avail. Have you any updates?

    • I use Thunderbird and my father uses comcast. None of his emails make it to me..nor does he get a bounce back.. so for a year he thought I was getting the mail. We haven’t been able to fix or find the answer. help!

  4. Sorry Becky, I’ve since moved on to other hellish beast service providers. Best of luck in resolving you’re problems though!

  5. I was on the phone with CC they were having serious issues around this problem. I was googling websites during the tech’s woodshedding holds and found yours .. It resolved my issues and I gave the tech your website. She is going to try to get this info into their solutions database and I strongly recommended that they come at you with a large thank you.. because they were stumped. (capital S) And my own hearty thanks (capital T) as well..

  6. BRILLIANT

  7. I LOVE YOU!

  8. Well I went from Eudora to Thunderbird. And I can’t send or receive mail from Comcast. I’ve tried just about everything. In the server settings of TBird should that port (to the right of mail.comcast.net) be changed to 587?
    Nothing works so far.Thanks.

    • Larry-

Sorry for the delay and I’m guessing you have this fixed, the default would be 587, but the fix above made it so I could send from other networks, so it should work for you as well.
